Through the 1980's and into the 90's I did numerous automatic drawings. I would sit in front of a clean sheet of paper and put down pencil lines and shading as my subconscious directed. It felt as though someone was looking over my shoulder and leading me. If an 'incorrect' line was drawn I could feel the impatience of my 'director' until it was erased. These images would take hours to reveal themselves and the creatures and shapes that emerged were surprising to say the least. At a certain point, when I started to feel I was forcing the images, I stopped producing this style of work and moved into realism with watercolours and pastels.
